The Healthy Oil That Isnt

Any cook will tell you that a little added fat can take a spaghetti sauce from so-so to downright delicious. And most people are under the impression that canola oil is a healthy choice.

If youre one of those people, we have bad news. Most canola oils come with health risks you may not have heard about.

First, any canola oil thats not labelled organic likely comes from GMO crops. In fact, about 90 percent of all canola oil from the United States AND Canada is GMO. This means, of course, youre potentially being exposed to dangerous glyphosates and other unknown dangers every time you take a bite of any product made with canola oil.

Since the canola oil listed in the ingredients list of Prego Traditional Spaghetti Sauce isnt organic theres a good chance that its GMO. But thats not the only problem with the canola oil in Prego or the only potential source of toxins.

Traditional canola oil is processed using chemicals that are known to be toxic. And while some say that none of those chemicals remain in the final product not everyone agrees that canola is safe, and questions still remain.

Cold-pressed or express-pressed canola oil isnt exposed to these chemicals during processing, but the canola oil in Prego isnt labelled as being either.

In addition vegetable oils, like canola oil, are high in omega-6s, which promote inflammation. Eating too many omega-6s and not enough omega-3s is linked to all kinds of diseases from heart disease to type-2 diabetes.

The three most crucial criteria to consider are price, quality, and popularity.Price is an obvious factor to consider, as you want to ensure it is acceptable for your needs.Quality should also be examined because buying a low-quality goods will not help you achieve your main aim of obtaining the best product. Finally, while not as obvious as price or quality, popularity can be just as significant as both when it comes to attracting new customers.

If youd like to lighten this baked ziti up, here are a couple swaps you can make:

  • Make my healthy turkey bolognese instead of the spaghetti bolognese. Turkey is a great source of lean protein!
  • Use greek yogurt instead of the sour cream. This lightens the calories and ups the protein while also maintaining the creaminess.

    What Is Ziti Made Of

I purchased all of the ingredients for baked ziti at our local Fred Meyer. If you are in the southern states, you can find them at Kroger.

    • Pasta: You will be using ziti noodles. They are tube-shaped and perfect for soaking up the sauce for big, juicy bites!
    • Sauce: I like using a savory sauce, like Prego® Flavored with Meat Pasta Sauce, to bring this dish together. It is the perfect combination of beef, tomato and spices!
    • Meatballs: If you are up to it, make your meatballs homemade. Or, to speed up the process, purchase frozen meatballs from the grocery store.
    • Cottage Cheese or Ricotta: Cottage cheese or ricotta adds a wonderfully creamy and rich flavor. They cut through the acidity of tomato sauce and complement it wonderfully.
    • Vegetables: Feel free to get creative here. I like to add bell peppers, cauliflower, onions and mushrooms. But, I imagine zucchini, artichoke hearts, asparagus and broccoli would be great additions as well.
    • Cheese: I am a baked ziti purist here. I think mozzarella works best. You could also sprinkle on some freshly grated Parmesan right when you remove your ziti from the oven. Ive even seen goat cheese used for the more adventurous!

Can I Cook This In A Crockpot

The only thing that brings a heartier taste to spaghetti than oven-baking it is the Crockpot! Crockpot spaghetti intensifies the simmered flavors, really deepening all the best parts of the spices and tomatoes. Plus, something wondrous happens with the noodles in that sauce its an Italian miracle!

    What Meat To Use

You can use ground beef, ground pork, italian sausage, ground turkey, or even ground chicken in this baked ziti.

I love to use my spaghetti bolognese for this recipe. Its super easy and adds so much texture and flavor to the casserole! Definitely worth the bit of extra time it takes to whip up.

However, if homemade bolognese isnt your thing, feel free to pair any ground meat with your favorite red sauce and some extra Italian seasoning!

How To Make Baked Ziti With Meat Sauce

To make the sauce, cook the ground beef in a large skillet over medium high heat until cooked through. Use a wooden spoon or angled silicone spatula, like this Zyliss Silicone Stir Fry Spatula from Amazon, to break up the meat while it cooks. Add in the onions and cook until softened. Stir in the garlic and seasonings and cook for a minute longer.

Pour in the tomato sauce and crushed tomatoes and bring to a low boil. Reduce heat and let simmer for at least 30 minutes. The sauce needs time to develop flavor, so the longer you let it cook the better! But if you are short on time, half an hour works great.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a separate pot, cook the ziti, penne, or rigatoni pasta. It doesnt matter what specific type of pasta you use, any tube-shaped pasta works. Add the sauce to the pasta and stir in the mozzarella and parmesan cheeses.

Pour into a large casserole dish or 9 x 13 inch baking pan. Sprinkle on remaining mozzarella cheese. Bake for 30 minutes covered. If desired, remove foil and broil for 2-3 minutes to get golden and bubbly. Let sit 5 minutes before serving. Enjoy!

    Farmers Market Four Cheese

If you are a health-conscious food lover and are looking for a cheesy tomato sauce that does not contain too many ingredients with names you dont recognize, this sauce may be for you. Per the Prego website, Pregos Farmers Market Four Cheese sauce contains tomato, basil, garlic, cream, as well as four cheeses: romano, parmesan, fontina, and asiago.

According to reviews on Walmart, many people love this sauce. One even says to do yourself a favor and buy this sauce. However, like most review sites, there are some contrasting opinions. Some reviewers find that this sauce lacks creaminess. One even mentions that the sauce is a bit watery. Overall, however, most people cannot get enough of this Farmers Market Four Cheese sauce. We happen to agree with some of these reviews. The sauce is cheesy and full of flavor, but not as creamy as we would have liked. For this reason, weve put this sauce near the middle of our ranking.

    How To Freeze Meat Sauce:

    The BEST Baked Ziti Recipe

Meat sauce will last in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. To store it longer, transfer meat sauce to a freezer-safe container, leaving just a slight amount of headroom at the top. We prefer freezing meat sauce in freezer ziploc bags because it lays flat in the freezer and can be quick-thawed under running water.

    Baked Ziti With Meat Sauce

This Baked Ziti with Meat Sauce is a crowd-pleaser baked pasta dish made by layering ziti noodles with ricotta and homemade tomato-meat sauce. It is a great recipe that not only feeds a crowd but also freezes beautifully.

The first time I published this easy baked ziti recipe was back in May of 2014. Since then, it has been a reader favorite. Because I am also a big fan of it and make it often, I decided to update it and answer a few questions that came up since it was first published four years ago.

I love baked ziti, I really do. Similar to my Spaghetti Bolognese, it is one of those classic Italian-American recipes that simply never gets old. Its the perfect combination of pasta to meat sauce to cheese.

The beauty of this pasta bake recipe is truly in the fact that it can feed a crowd, offering a hearty and comforting meal for your dinner guests. But its also great because if you dont have many people to feed, such as the case for my husband and I, leftovers can be stored in the freezer so that dinner can be on the table in a matter of minutes!

How To Prevent A Dry Baked Ziti

No one wants a dry baked ziti! Let’s take a look at a few of the common reasons why baked ziti can turn out dry, and how to prevent it.

    • Not enough sauce – make sure you’re using about 24 ounces of marinara sauce. You can even add up to a cup of extra sauce if you’d like a very saucy casserole!
    • The pasta wasn’t cooked long enough on the stove top. If the pasta is undercooked, it will continue cooking in the oven, soaking up moisture in the casserole.
    • You forgot/omitted the cheese topping – this helps to insulate your pasta and prevent it from drying out on top.
    • The casserole was baked for too long – 30 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit should be long enough to warm your casserole.
    • If you’re reheating your casserole straight from the refrigerator, it will likely need an additional 10-15 minutes of baking time. I recommend covering with foil for half of your baking time to prevent drying out.

If your casserole looks dry on top – maybe some of the pasta was exposed without sauce or cheese – simply give your casserole a stir before serving. This will incorporate the dry noodles into the sauce and cheese layers below.

Can You Put Frozen Chicken In The Slow Cooker

I get this question often so I like to answer it. The best answer is no, you shouldnt put frozen chicken in a slow cooker. A slow cooker is just that, a slow cooker. It doesnt bring meat up to a safe temperature quickly enough to start from frozen. People do it often and Im sure its sometimes fine, but its safest to only use thawed chicken in the crock pot.

    How To Make Baked Ziti:

Preheat oven to 350F degrees. Spray a 9×13 baking dish with nonstick spray. Prepare pasta according to directions. In a medium sauce pan, brown ground beef with onion After beef is browned and crumbled, drain excess grease.

Put back in pot and pour in one jar of spaghetti sauce. Keep mixture on low until pasta is done.

When pasta is finished, drain well. You want the pasta as dry as possible. Put pasta back in large pot and pour in jar of alfredo sauce. Combine until thoroughly coated.

Pour pasta mixture into bottom of 9×13 dish.

Cover pasta with spaghetti sauce mixture.

    Sprinkle top with mozzarella cheese.

Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 15 minutes. I like to spray the inside of my foil with nonstick spray so the cheese doesn’t stick to it. Or you could use nonstick aluminum foil. Remove foil and bake for another 15 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly.

Let rest for about 5 minutes after taking out of oven.

What Is The Difference Between Lasagna And Baked Ziti

Lasagna and baked ziti have many things in common. They are both pasta dishes that are baked in sauce and topped with cheese. But, what makes them different? Well, lasagna is made with long, flat noodles that are layered with sauce, meat, veggies, and/or cheese. Baked ziti, on the other hand, is made with cooked ziti noodles . Instead of layers, the pasta is tossed with the sauce, meat, and/or veggies sprinkled with cheese and baked.
