Fill Them With Sweet Things

How to Make Classic Baked Apples

Place your hollowed-out apples in a baking dish that has sides that are at least 2 inches high and doesn’t leave too much empty room around the apples. Then fill each apple with something sweet, some spices, and some butter.

You want about 1 Tbsp. of sweetener per apple: it can be either a liquid or granulated sweetener, like brown sugar, coconut sugar, maple sugar, maple syrup, or honey. Add a pinch or two of your favorite baking spices to each apple too: cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, clove, cardamom, and/or ginger. And dont forget a pinch of salt too. A few little cubes of butter in each apple will help make them more saucy and deliciousadd the butter along with the sweetener and seasonings. It doesnt really matter what order everything goes in, since it will all melt together as it bakes.

I’m using water here, but apple cider works great too.

How Long Does It Take Apples To Cook In The Oven

Cooked apples can be whole or chopped or sliced. You’ll need an oven set to 375 degrees F. Sliced apples will take about 25 to 30 minutes, and stuffed baked apples will take about 45 minutes or so. Both methods are listed in detail below.

Don’t leave them in the oven too long or they become mushy, baked apples are ready when they are tender but still have a little bite to them. To be sure, carefully use a fork to check for doneness. It should slide through easily.

Can I Make Baked Apple Halves For A Smaller Portion

These stuffed baked apples are a pretty big dessert! For a smaller portion, you can use lunchbox sized apples .

Or, another super simple way to make a smaller portion is to make baked apple HALVES! To prepare baked apple halves, simply cut each apple in half and use a spoon to scoop out the seeds and core to form a little apple bowl.

Divide the filling into the apple halves and bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until tender.

What You Need For Baked Apples

Easy Baked Cinnamon Apples

Apples. You dont need to be super specific, but I find Gala apples to be the best. But also, Fuji apples are a great option.

Rolled oats: Old-fashioned rolled oats are your best friend for this recipe to give the filling a bite.

Sweet: There are two types of sugar you need for this recipe. A liquid syrup and regular sugar, such as coconut sugar or brown sugar. If you skip the refined sugars this recipe is a delicious naturally sweetened treat.

Warming spices: To create a beautiful warming filling Im using cinnamon, nutmeg, and pumpkin spice.

Nuts: For this recipe, you can technically speaking use any kind of nuts, or a mixture of nuts and seeds. I can highly recommend sticking to walnuts or pecans for this recipe though.

Flavor: A quality vanilla is a delicious way to flavor these baked apples.

Coconut oil: I make these baked apples often with and without coconut oil. In the recipe notes, you can read how to make this recipe oil-free. With coconut oil, the taste is a bit more rich.

Salt: Just a pinch to make all the flavors pop.

Prepare The Apples Carefully

This baked apple recipe yields beautiful and delicious results, in large part because of how we slice the apples .

Slicing off the tops of the apples gives us easier access to the insides for scooping and provides greater surface area for steam to escape from the apple flesh, reducing the likelihood that the skin will split open. The tops create a micro-environment that helps the apple bake evenly throughout and prevents the filling from becoming too golden. All that, and the apple tops are cute!

How To Make Oil

Its very well possible to make oil-free baked apples or make them even more buttery.

If you are looking for a deep flavor and coconut oil is too light for you, you can replace the coconut oil with vegan butter.

But if coconut oil is too oily for you, you can omit it. Instead, add one tablespoon of a nut- or seed butter, such as tahini or runny almond butter together with a tablespoon of maple syrup. This will create a sticky addition to the mixture without having to use oil.

Honestly, I sometimes dont even taste the difference whether I made baked apples with or without oil/butter.

Baked Apple Recipe Ingredients

I mentioned these baked apples were simple, right? To make them, you only need 8 ingredients:

  • Apples, of course! I recommend using crisp, firm apples for this recipe. Honeycrisp work really well, as do Pink Lady and Gala.
  • Whole rolled oats The toasty oats are one of my favorite parts of my apple crisp , so I knew I wanted to use them in the topping for my baked apples too.
  • Almond flour and crushed walnuts They add richness and nutty flavor to the topping. If you dont have walnuts on hand, chopped pecans would be a lovely swap.
  • Brown sugar It sweetens the topping.
  • Apple Pie Spice For warm, spiced autumn flavor. I use a homemade blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cardamom, but a store-bought blend or plain cinnamon would also do the trick.
  • Coconut oil Some firm, some melted. The firm coconut oil helps the topping clump together, and the melted coconut oil helps the apples become moist and tender as they bake.
  • And sea salt To make all the flavors pop!

How To Prepare The Apples For This Baked Apple Recipe:

While my apple rose tart is undeniably beautiful, its certainly a lot of work. This stuffed baked apple recipe is the complete opposite. In fact, you dont even need to peel the apples!

All you need to do is use a sharp knife to cut about 1/2 inch off of the top of each apple.

And then, using a melon baller if you have one , youre going to be scooping out the seeds, any remaining stem, and some of the center of the apple to make way for the filling.

You dont want to scoop out TOO much, because you want to leave some apple flesh for eating! Try to leave about 1/2-inch thickness on all sides of the apple while scooping out all of the core and seeds. Then youre ready to stuff them!

Serve Them Hot Maybe With Cream

When you pull the baked apples out of the oven, let them sit for five to ten minutes before serving to avoid burning mouths. Scoop some of the liquid from the baking dish into each bowl along with each apple. Then add a splash of cold heavy cream if you like or a scoop of ice cream or yogurtsomething cold and creamy next to a hot, sweet apple is always a very good thing.

Tips For Best Results

  • Baking. The baking time depends on how thin or thick you cut the apple slices. I personally prefer to cut them thinner to make sure they bake through and get soft.
  • Stirring. Make sure you stir them at least a couple of times while baking to mix all the sauce ingredients together. At first, when the butter is melted, it might look like the sauce is greasy and the fats are separating. After you bake it longer and stir a few times, everything will bind together and the sauce will caramelize.

Choose The Right Apples

My mom and I can never decide which is the best apple variety for making baked apples. Some varieties turn to mush so fast they explode out of their skins, while some stay weirdly firm. Either way they’re edible, but not ideala baked apple should stay intact but be soft enough to eat with a spoon. So I decided to make the dish with as many apples as I could find at the grocery store so I could set the record straight for my mama.

After making the dish in the exact same way with eight different varieties , there were were two clear winners: Gala and Fuji apples, which both got nice and soft inside, but maintained their shape when baked.

You’ll need one apple per person. It doesn’t matter how many you bake at oncejust choose a baking dish that’ll hold your desired amount of apples with not too much empty space around them.

The sharp edges of a 1/2 tsp. measuring spoon make a great apple scoop.

  • Cut the tops of the apple off along with the stem. Then, cut a small part of the bottom of the apple as well. This will help it stand up without shifting or rolling.

Which Apples Are Best For Baked Apples

There are many apples to choose from, but when it comes to baking, select ones that are large and firm. The best apples for baking are ones that can hold up under the heat and won’t turn mushy when cooked. Depending on how tart or sweet you like your apples, here are a few good options for baking:

    • Granny smith. Known as go-to baking apples, Granny Smith apples are green and quite tart
    • Pink lady. These are crisp and balanced in flavor between sweet and tart, although can be more on the tart side.
    • Jonagold. These are a cross between golden delicious and a Johnathan. They are juicy with a honey-sweet taste and a hint of tartness
    • Honeycrsip apples. These are perfect raw, but because of their firm, super crisp structure, they are also great for baking. Honeycrisp apples are also balanced in flavor, although more on the sweeter side. .

Lets take a trip down memory lane. It was about 10 years ago I devoured my first really good baked apples. I probably had them before, but this one stood out in terms of flavor. Its so interesting to see that food can bring back such fond memories. It was a cold winter day and my father-in-law told me he made a special dessert for me. He opened the oven and presented proudly his healthy baked apples. The scent of baked apples welcomed me along with his big smile. He told me how healthy the baked version of apples is. Good for the stomach and the appetite, he said.

While this is a simple recipe, there are a few things to keep in mind. I have shared the initial recipe about 6 years ago and have been updating it to make the perfect recipe.

When fully baked until tender and delicious, they dont look like anything special, but after that first bite you dont care about how your baked apple is looking.
