Duke The Dog From The Bushs Baked Beans Commercials Has Passed Away
It is always tragic when a beloved animal passes away. Recently, the dog who played Duke in the BUSHS® Baked Beans commercials was put down after a difficult battle with cancer. His real name was Sam, and like many animal mascots, he held a special place in many peoples hearts.
Everyone knows the BUSHS® Beans commercials. They are cheesy but lovable. Like our own pets, the back and forth between Duke and Jay Bush was endearing and relatable. They had some fun dialogue that was silly but stuck with you. The quirkiness of the commercials was lovable in the way that it portrayed Duke and Jays friendship. That Duke leveraged the secret to Bushs beans against Jay was often charming, funny, and relatable.
Duke, the dog, was a character. The dog Sam played Duke for years before his passing and was a trained acting canine. Sam was used in commercials but most known for playing Duke even being called Duke sometimes in public. Sam led a great life in Florida and was cared for by Susan. Her neighbor David Odom broke the news of Sam passing away, and the response has been overwhelming. Even BUSHS® Beans has released a statement reinforcing the positive relationship between Duke and Jay Bush. It is heartwarming to see such a positive reaction to such a loved animal. It was the kind of send off Sam deserved. PLUS he always had access to the best water fountain around!

Sharp-eyed television watchers may be confused about Duke, the dog featured in the humorous ad campaign for Bushs Baked Beans. A golden retriever named Sam, one of several dogs who played Duke in the company’s television commercials, passed away June 27. He had been suffering from an aggressive cancer.
But as we reported in early July, Sam was only one of numerous dogs who have portrayed Duke in ads, and Sam actually hadn’t appeared in the commercials in years.
When Sam died, it was obviously sad, Jay Bush, great-grandson of the company’s founder, told People magazine on Aug. 8. When word got out, I had close, personal friends calling me to say they were sorry, asking how the brand would move forward, thinking the one and only Duke had died. Weve lost other Dukes, but I suppose not in this world of social media. It was one of those things that makes you think, Wow, people really do love the idea of this dog.
In the popular and light-hearted ads, Bush and a dog who’s always referred to as Duke, despite his or her off-screen name, appear together. Duke constantly tries to scam Bush into allowing him to sell the family’s recipe for their baked beans. The ads always include Jay Bush requesting that the camera operator, “Roll that beautiful bean footage!”

Alternate Slow Cooker Instructions
Prepare the beans on the stove, as directed and then transfer them to a 6-quart or larger slow cooker. Cook on low for 3 hours at the most, stirring about halfway through the cooking time. Canned beans are already cooked so you want to avoid cooking them longer than 3 hours in a slow cooker or they can take on a mushy texture.

Why This Casserole Works
Frugal Meal This cost me $3ish dollars to make. Granted, I do live on the East Coast so your prices may vary. I did use the cheapest hot dogs because I knew I would be adding lots of flavor so I could get away with it.
Pretty Quick This meal could be a stovetop dinner if you choose not to bake it. Simply simmer the beans for 10 minutes , and serve.
Family-Friendly Kids and adults love this meal! I was born in 84 so meals like this were what I grew up on. My parents were poor and had to feed 5 kids so hot dogs and beans it was!

Storing Hot Dogs + Beans
Store any cooled leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Microwave until warmed throughout.
Cover and freeze unbaked casserole for up to 3 months. I like to use aluminum foil pans for storing frozen casseroles because they can easily go from freezer to oven effortlessly. Just be sure to mark the outside of the foil with the recipe, date, and oven temp.
