How To Roast A Whole Butternut Squash In The Oven

How to Roast Butternut Squash the easy waywhole in the oven! Winter squashes can be tricky to cut because of their firmness, so cutting them can actually be dangerous. Its easy to slip and slice yourself when youre exerting all that pressure. This simple method really couldnt be any easier and theres no chance youll lose a finger before dinner! Just wash, pierce, and toss it in the oven! Done.

My friend Melanie taught me to pierce the bottom of the squash instead of poking holes all around the skin to vent it for escaping steam. The knife slides right in!

How To Cook Spaghetti Squash Fast

Microwaving is probably the fastest way to cook spaghetti squash. If youre wondering how to microwave spaghetti squash, what you can do is cut it in half and microwave for about ten minutes. This method does work, but its not my favorite.

I dont like the microwaving method for two reasons. First of all, I try to avoid cooking food in the microwave when possible. Pretty much any other cooking method is healthier and preserves food nutrients better.

Second, microwaving often results in uneven heating, and thus uneven cooking. You may end up with some areas of the squash noodles mushy and others too raw. Who wants that?

So, what is my favorite way to cook spaghetti squash fast? Roast it at a high temperature!

Many baked spaghetti squash recipes use lower oven temperatures, which take longer. Im impatient! The key is roasting spaghetti squash at a high temp to save time. Most recipes do it at 350 or 375 degrees, but I went as high as 425 degrees to save time.

The higher temperature does mean youll get a little caramelizing on the edge if youre using the cut-in-half method, but who cares? I actually think its delicious. If you dont like that part, its only on the surface anyway. Totally worth the time savings!

An average sized squash can be anywhere between 1 ½ to 2 pounds in weight.

Look at the skin on the butternut squash.

If there is any green whatsoever, it’s not ripe.

The skin should be hard, one solid color, and matte–not glossy anywhere.

You might find a few dings or dents in the skin of the squash and that’s totally normal.

Which Squashes Work Best To Cut And Bake

One hope I have for this site is that readers learn which squashes are in which clan among the three major squash species: maxima, moschata, and pepo. Once you get to know these clans, youll understand that species has a lot to do with the different squashes taste, texture, and how to cook them. Cucurbita moschatasquashes such as butternut, honeynut, calabaza, and Thai pumpkins are my favorites for the baked squash treatment.

Among Cucurbita pepo types, sweet dumpling and winter luxury pie pumpkin are tasty baked. Most store-bought acorn and delicata squashes are less sweet and may yield a less wonderful result, or can be deliciously doctored up with butter, maple, sweet spices, or other creative additions.

Cucurbita maxima includes the dry, flaky, meaty squashes like kabocha, kuri, and turban, which often do better steamed or stewed than baked in a plain way without moist add-ins or fillings. But other C. maxima types such as baby blue hubbard, buttercup, and sweet meat are a little juicier and bake up nicely. Finally, pink banana, candy roaster, and blue hubbard are C. maxima squashes that dont fit in your oven never mind on a baking sheet when cut according to this recipe, but do make a great baked squash when cut to fit!

Tetsukabuto squash, a moschata/maxima cross, bakes beautifully.

    How To Prepare Acorn Squash

Step one is to slice your acorn squash in half . Given its tough exterior and round shape, acorn squash can be a bit slippery. Youll need a sharp chefs knife and a non-slip cutting board, like this one , or you can place a lightly damp tea towel under your cutting board to keep it in place.

Start by piercing the squash in the center along a depression line. Then, cut through the tip. Finish by slicing through the top portion just next to the stem.

Use a large spoon to scoop out the seeds and stringy bits inside, and discard those pieces. Or, you can roast the seeds as you would pumpkin seeds. Youll find the rest of the recipe below!
