The Baker Heart Research Institute

J. F. Mackeddie, a pathologist originally from Scotland, but who practised in Melbourne in the early 20th century, became a close friend of Thomas Baker through being neighbours on land south of the city. Mackeddie was “concerned with the science of diseases and the need to apply the advancing knowledge of biological science to human illness After convincing Baker to donate funds, firstly to the Alfred Hospital and then for research, he went on to become one of the founding Trustees of the Baker Medical Research Institute. Mackeddie recruited A. B. Corkill as a biochemist for the new Institute. The salary was paid by Thomas Baker.

The only consistent basic research in relation to diabetes and carbohydrate metabolism in the 20 years from 1925 was carried out at the Baker Institute in Melbourne.

Basil Corkill described the methods of diagnosis and treatment of diabetes mellitus at the Alfred Hospital in 1927. Twenty years later, in 1947, Joe Bornstein a young biochemist was introduced to Basil Corkill, who by then was Director of the Baker Institute. Their work together resulted in the discovery of the 2 forms of diabetes insulin dependent diabetes mellitus and non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus . This discovery in 1949 ..literally changed the concepts, research and treatment of diabetes”.:37

    Situation

    Diabetes is a disease with devastating complications. Left uncontrolled, sufferers may face kidney disease, heart disease, limb amputations, blindness and fatality. Indigenous Australians are four times more likely than non-Indigenous Australians to experience this disease.

    In some remote areas, up to 50% of community members are affected by diabetes.

    End stage renal disease, of which diabetes is a common precursor, has reached such levels that local kidney dialysis centers are being overwhelmed with demand and can no longer cope.

    Despite significant attempts by governments to Close the Gap, diabetes remains one of the chronic diseases driving much of the almost ten-year disparity in life expectancy between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. Clearly more needs to be done to manage diabetes and help to prevent its potentially catastrophic effects. TDM is passionate about backing world-leading thinkers and doers whose ideas, passion and hard work are changing lives.

    How we help

    Associate Professor Cohen aims to re-write the guidelines for standard of care in remote communities. His team will examine whether lifestyle interventions and the use of a long acting once weekly therapy can improve outcomes relating to patient health and wellbeing.     The Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute, commonly known as the Baker Institute, is an Australian independent medical researchinstitute headquartered in Melbourne, Victoria. Established in 1926, the institute is one of Australia’s oldest medical research organisations with a historical focus on cardiovascular disease. In 2008, it became the country’s first medical research institute to target diabetes, heart disease, obesity and their complications at the basic, clinical and population health levels.

    The institute is located adjacent to The Alfred Hospital within the Alfred Research Alliance Precinct. The institute also has a national Aboriginal Health program, with a research facility in Alice Springs in the Northern Territory.

    Exercise Protects Breast Cancer Patients’ Hearts Against Chemotherapy Drugs New Study Finds

    Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality in breast cancer survivors. A new study out of the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute has found that exercise training three to four times per week protects against heart damage and losses in cardiovascular fitness experienced by breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.

    During a three-month course of chemotherapy, the average breast cancer patient loses 1015% of their cardiovascular fitness, the same loss as would be expected with 10 years of normal aging.

    In the BREXIT study, published in Circulation and presented at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions 2022 in Chicago, patients who participated in 12 months of exercise training over the course of their breast cancer treatment improved their cardiovascular health by on average 8%, or eight years’ worth of fitness, lead researcher Dr. Steve Foulkes said.

    “What we’ve found is that the women who were in the supervised exercise group didn’t experience the reductions in fitness and heart function that we saw in those who underwent cancer treatment according to current usual care standards,” Dr. Foulkes said.

    The study found that none of the patients were functionally disabled if they were able to consistently perform two-to-three weekly sessions throughout the full 12 months of the study. In contrast, one in every five subjects who did not consistently exercise were disabled at 12 months.

    In 2008 the Baker Heart Research Institute, as it was then known, merged with the International Diabetes Institute which had operated in Melbourne for over 25 years.:69

    The International Diabetes Institute

    The International Diabetes Institute was started in Melbourne in 1984 by Professor Paul Zimmet AO a number of years after his appointment to the Royal Southern Memorial Hospital.

    “The research of Paul and his team in Pacific and Indian Ocean populations has provided new insights into the genetic contribution of NIDDM as well as the role of obesity, physical activity, nutrition and sociocultural change in the aetiology of this disorder”.

    In 1980 Zimmet was asked by the Council of the Australian Diabetes Society to prepare a submission, along with colleague Dr Ian Martin, titled ‘Diabetes in Australia’. The submission was to the Federal Minister of Health. The submission highlighted the impact of diabetes in the community and what government needed to invest to find a cure or treatment and to support people with diabetes.:75 At the same time, with Drv Matthew Cohen, Zimmet was the first to report their experience with home glucose monitoring and its acceptance in the diabetic population. They found better control, less hypoglycaemia and 95% acceptance.

    In addition to research, the IDI operated diabetes clinics in Melbourne from the site of the Caulfield Hospital. The diabetes clinics are the largest in Victoria, with more than 8000 patients per year and continue to be operated by Baker IDI from the organisation’s site in Prahran in Melbourne’s inner south-east.
